After the first 26 races of the NASCAR Cup Series season, the playoffs, formerly known as the Chase, are here.
To determine the 2019 champion, 16 playoff drivers will compete and try to advance through nine races that are broken into three rounds leading up to the 10th race for the title at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November. There are three races in each round, which closes with a cutoff race as the playoff field shrinks from 16 drivers to 12, from 12 to eight and from eight to the final Championship 4.
There are two ways for drivers to qualify for the playoffs. A win automatically qualifies a driver to compete for a championship, and if there are not 16 different winners, the top winless drivers in the standings earn the remaining spots. This season, 10 different drivers qualified with at least one checkered flag, while the other six made it based on points in the driver standings.
Most of the usual suspects are in the playoffs this year, like regular-season champion Kyle Busch, defending Cup Series champion Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski.
The surprises are more about who's not in the playoffs. Specifically, seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson missed the playoffs for the first time in his career, so his quest for a record-breaking eighth title will have to wait until 2020.
